Convert trip miles into gallons and dollars
Trip Fuel Estimate uses route miles and an MPG assumption to estimate gallons consumed, then prices those gallons at the entered fuel price. It is a forward-looking trip budget rather than a fuel-stop plan.
Include the miles you actually intend to run. Leaving out deadhead or repositioning understates both gallons and cost.
When this calculation is useful
- Preparing a quick fuel budget before dispatch.
- Testing a conservative MPG or fuel-price scenario.
- Separating fuel cost from the rest of a load-profit decision.
Estimate consumption before applying price
- Trip miles
- Total trip miles represented by the estimate.
- MPG
- Expected average MPG across those miles.
- Fuel price
- Planning price per gallon.
Formula
Gallons = trip miles ÷ MPG; fuel cost = estimated gallons × fuel price
The first division estimates gallons required. The second step prices that consumption. Because one blended MPG is used, a trip with materially different loaded and empty performance may need a more detailed Load Desk analysis.
Example: an 860-mile fuel budget
Assume 860 total miles, 7.2 MPG and $3.76 per gallon.
- 860 ÷ 7.2 = about 119.44 gallons.
- 119.44 × $3.76 = about $449.11.
Result: The example trip uses an estimated 119.44 gallons costing $449.11.
Decision use: Use a conservative scenario if route, payload or weather could reduce MPG.
Budget consumption, then plan stops separately
The gallons result is not a recommendation to purchase that exact quantity at one stop. Tank capacity, existing fuel, route access and price strategy remain separate operational decisions.
Common mistakes
- Entering loaded miles while omitting empty movement.
- Using advertised MPG instead of an operating estimate supported by records.
- Treating estimated consumption as the same as gallons purchased during the trip.
Limits and assumptions
- Idle time, auxiliary equipment, reserve fuel and separate loaded/empty MPG are not modeled.
- The tool does not identify fuel stops or live prices.
